The Federal Government of Somalia and the European Union held a political dialogue

Mogadishu, November 11, 2020;The Prime Minister welcomed the delegation and conveyed the importance of Somalia’s relationship with the European Union.

The two parties benefitted from discussing issues of mutual interest based on a jointly agreed agenda. The dialogue showed a high level of partnership under an open, respectful, cordial and a constructive atmosphere. The agenda covered the upcoming elections and the relationship among political leaders, security sector reforms – including the revision of the Transition Plan, economic reforms, development cooperation, and human rights.

In this context, the Federal Government and the EU welcomed the upcoming virtual Somalia Security Event, co-hosted by Somalia, AU and EU on 30 November.

In conclusion, the Federal Government of Somalia reiterated its commitment to political, economic and security sector reforms and the EU confirmed its engagement to support Somalia’s statebuilding efforts. The Somali Government commended the EU contribution to the security sector and to the increasing leadership of Somalia’s defense institutions. Both parties committed to continue to work together towards the upcoming elections and the improvement of Somalia’s democratic credentials in constitutional reform, justice and Human Rights.

The Somalia delegation included the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, the Minister of Justice, the Minister of Finance, the Minister of Defense, the Minister of Internal Security, the Minister of Interior and Federal Affairs, the Minister of Planning, Investment and Economic Development, the Minister of Constitutional Affairs, the Minister of Women and Human Rights Development and the State Minister at the Office of Prime Minister.

The delegation of the EU, led by the European Union Ambassador, comprised Ambassadors from Germany, Finland, Spain, Italy, Sweden, Denmark and Ireland, together with EU Mission Commanders of EUNAVFOR, EUCAP and EUTM.
